The love of the two Diary Users, Marco Ikusuba and Ai Mikami, had a tragic history. The two of them met one day when Ai Mikami was abandoned in Sakurami Tower. Ai Mikami was in a current ready to cry when Marco Ikusuba found him and told him, 'if today is your worst day, don't be sad, it's just going to be better,' or something like that. From then on, Ai Mikami fell in love with him.
Later on, when the two entered school Ai Mikami never wanted to leave Marco Ikusuba's side. He was hesitant at first but gradually also fell in love with her.
The tragedy happened when a group of Ai Mikami's colleague got jealous of her and had planned to have raped. She got a message from 'Marco' to met up with him in a factory and she obliged. It there that a pack of school boys appeared and tainted her. Marco Ikubasa was too late when he arrived in the factory. But not too late to beat the hell out of the students as well as killed one of them.
The two ran away both traumatized of what had happened: Ai on being raped and Marco on his inability to save her as well as him killing one of the student. Marco intended to commit suicide but was stopped by Ai, saying she will stay with him forever and he to her as well.
The two, Marco Ikusuba and Ai Mikami, are bestowed with the twin Future Diary, the Diary of Love. Their diary foretell the future of one another, Marco to Ai and Ai to Marco. By being together they can know what will happen to each other, making them formidable players in the survival game. The goal of this duo is to become god so that the two of the will stay together forever.
In comparison to the romance between the two main protagonist, as Marco would say, 'our (Marco and Ai's) love is true and your (Yuno Gasai's and Yukitero Amano's) love is fake.
I guess, these two were used as a somewhat, wake up call for Yukitero Amano. From the start, he meant to only use Yuno Gasai as a means to survive the game. And from the majority of the game, Yukitero Amano was weak while his lover, a woman, is always there for him, ready to kill and die just to stay keep him safe. She was always there for him, always. Even though he would often times doubt her as well as reject her.
Also in the second clash between the four, it was odd to see Yuno Gasai break character and suddenly blamed Yukitero Amano, 'indirectly,' that the reason why they lose on their first bout was that the match was two against one. Yukitero Amano wasn't there to help her, always. Also the reason why Marco was really mad at him.
The redeeming thing that Yukitero Amano did that not even Marco Ikusuba, couldn't do was to be on time for his lover. Yuno Gasai was almost raped by a cult group when suddenly Yukitero Amano came on time to save her. But... that is just because he had a diary in his possession on that time, while Marco, in their tragic story, was too late to realize of what was happening and what had happened to Ai.
On the death of the Seventh, Marco saved the two. He remarked that he pities the two, mainly on Yukitero Amano. He embraced Ai's dead body, they fulfilled their promise to each other. The building collapsed with the two of them by each other's side.
