Domestic Girlfriend by Tatsuya Takahashi, Shota Ihata (anime)

A bit fucked up, cute and beautiful. Lewds here and there, from time to time, but a different kind of series. Or rather this is my first time watching an anime that deals with two topics, the tragedy of statuses in relationship and the tragic of love triangles.

Natsuo Fujii, the main protagonist of the story is in love with his teacher, Hina Tachibana. But of course, the love cannot be realized with the status of them both, a teacher and a student. It was an unrequited love that Natsuo felt whenever he had conversations with her during breaks.

Natsuo was then invited to a 'mixer,' a meet up with strangers. There he got to hook up and had his first time with a girl he didn't know about. After what had happened they both agreed to be strangers since there was no feeling on what they did, and in part, that girl asked him to do it for the sake of know what it felt like. So that when her friends got to talk about 'sex,' she wouldn't be left out.

It was only after the second half of the first episode revealed that the girl Natsuo had his first time with was the sister of his teacher, Rui Tachibana.

And for some odd reason, Natsuo's father and the mother of the Tachibana sisters are going to get married.

It's funny to see how the main character Natsuo reacted to this. He was happy first and foremost because he will be family with the girl of his dream but at the same time he felt it wrong. Brothers and sisters, having an affair?

But at the same time, one would feel that life, reality, is very very cruel.

Having felt the resolve of Natsuo, Hina gave in and reciprocated his love for her. But it was also this time when Rui found herself falling in love with Natsuo.

-----

It is odd but I felt like crying when Hina decided to leave. But I couldn't. Certain tears form up in my eyes as I watched how Natsuo used his depression as a fuel for his winning literary work. It ended well for the two, or probably only for Rui. Natsuo is still in love with Hina. after all, but then Rui saw it as an opportunity for the two of them to reconsider/reconcile.

Perhaps I cheated a bit... I looked for the manga version of this anime, and found out it keeps going after the anime ended. A certain season 2 perhaps may appear, hopefully. That's why I felt no sorrow forming in me.

After watching the anime series, it left a happy note. Or I haven't yet formed a proper thought for what I just watched. All the while I was watching, my mind says this is all fucked up, but at the same time, I was admiring what was happening.

Natsuo's unwavering love for his teacher and Hina's resolve, both her duty, heart and her concern for her student. But let's not left out Rui's detachment and growth throughout the series, her growing feelings for Natsuo, her being herself, childish but obliged.

Of some certain machination that brought them closer. Of how things went through. Of how things went around them. Of their fallout with each other. Of their fallout with reality. Of them facing reality. Of them living in a reality, a cruel reality, and accepting it. Of them them coping with reality. Of them parting ways. Of them reconciling with each other.

I guess, this is what star crossed lovers feels most of the time. A love kept hidden while at the same time holding back feelings when in face with the society. But in reality, it doesn't always ended happily for the two lovers, does it?

At the end of the anime, after two, Rui kissed Natsuo, it was revealed that Hina had cut her hair and she was then a teacher in a different school. The students had mixed emotion of Hina deciding on cutting her hair. The scene ended with her looking out the window and the ring Natsuo gave her sitting in a display overlooking her. Her face not being shown which was odd. It killed any sorrowful emotion I'm sure ready to tear up. Was it her resolve?

----

The story reminds me a bit of the film animation, 'Garden of Words,' of what would have happen if the love between the two in that film realized. Without of course that love triangle forming. But then again, the comedy here and there sort of stopped it from making me emotionally invested. Or am I just too immature to have fully understood the theme as well as the series?

With the blank expression Hina gave and the two, Rui and Natsuo making out in the end, I guess this was a happy ending tragic series after all. I'm pretty sure the season two will be more heartbreaking after this, in case a season two would be released.

Here's the manga version by the way: https://mangarock.com/manga/mrs-serie-61792 --- I'll probably read it... or not. :( the manga is at 242 episode right now and still on going

The series probably ended here: https://mangarock.com/manga/mrs-serie-61792/chapter/mrs-chapter-61876 chapter 71 and https://mangarock.com/manga/mrs-serie-61792/chapter/mrs-chapter-61877 chapter 72 (a bit ecchi.. but kawaii)
