Charlotte by Jun Maeda, Yoshiyuki Asai

While watching certain clips in youtube, I came across the sister of Yuu Otosaka, Ayumi Otosaka. It showed her kindness and her caring for her brother. I guess, I grew to like this character, it was a shock for me to learn that she will die in the anime. But after watching the anime, it seemed to have fell from the route that I had in my mind.

Before watching the series, I thought this will be like in Code Geass, only darker. But I guess it didn't. It's a relief for me to watch as the main character, Yuu Otosaka, saved her little sister with the Time Leap ability.

But before I talk about that, on the time line that Ayumi died, Yuu had fell rock bottom. To a point when he almost did drugs to try to forget his late sister. Amazingly, Tomori Nao, the love interest of Yuu, saved him. He brought him back with the Rice Omelette that Ayumi was always cooking for him.

Yuu hated the taste of her sister cooking the dish but after her death, it was that same dish that brought him back.

It would have been great if they never introduced the Time Leap ability and if Ayumi stayed dead. But that's just me being selfish. Don't get me wrong, realizing that Ayumi could be brought back had me smile. Besides, after all the shit he just went through, it was that that lead him to grow.

Before the Time Leap ability and after Yuu came back to his senses, I guess the writer foreshadowed about it, but his minute habit of him wanting to come back home early to eat his sister's cooking as well as wanting to call her she'd be late, his emotion or rather the scene wasn't as effective as I thought it would.

Perhaps at those time, he really have moved on and his focus were on returning the favor for Tomori Nao.

The ending of the anime, didn't go as I expected. Before watching the anime and only watching short clips, I thought he was doing all that as revenge for the powers spread across the world, all for the sake of her long lost little sister. But I'm wrong. Or symbolically, I may be right?

For the sake of Kumagami's death, the best friend of Yuu and Ayumi's older brother, he made a promise with Tomori Nao. To take away the threat that is scattered across the world.

The promise between the two lovers seemed bland, at least to me, and rushed. The comic conversation between the two says it all, it was his also confession.to her. It was expected but not much emphasis was given to this. Or perhaps, the anime just had to focus on other things that it may me feel it was rushed.

Seeing Tomori Nao in her underwear when she was beaten and tortured had me worried if she was raped and all, she is after the love interest of Yuu Otosaka. But my idea got successfully rejected when I looked for answers in the internet. Even though I'm not able to connect with the character of Tomori Nao, I still like the couples idea of her and Yuu.

As for the task that Yuu Otosaka took, it somehow made me remember the task of Orpheus and Eurydice from mythology. The entirety of the Yuu's quest took great toll in his mental health. He was becoming stronger but it came to point when if for just a single moment Yuu takes a rest, he'd go in an unconscious rampage. There were times when he would even kill powerless civilian.

Near the end of Yuu's quest, he had lost all the memories save his knowledge of what he is doing. He even asked himself why he was doing it all in the first place, decided to stop it once and for all without finishing it. But again, as per circumstance, the pamplet Tomori Nao gave him, placed him back on track. He still couldn't remember her though.

At the end of his journey, it was ironic that he was saved by his last target. The wielder of the ability Courage. It was shown in this scene that even though he was mentally unstable and have forgotten all his memories, he still had his humanity. He saved the wielder of the ability and asked her to leave him be.

His remarks that the little girls courage even without the ability is nothing more but recklessness.

Yuu was once more shot and fell on the ground. When he wake up, he was in a hospital and beside her Tomori Nao. His quest was done and they are now lovers as per the agreement of the two. Yes, it doesn't sound too romantic but that's how things really ended in the series.

The anime ended with the student council as well as Ayumi, taking a video from Tomori Nao's camcoder. Stating that they will be making more happy memories, from here on, and Tomori Nao will record it all.

As for my analogy of the Orpheus and Eurydice, I don't know why but the impossible task of Yuu Otosaka was, in my opinion, a proposal of Yuu to Tomori. And her parting gift to him was what kept him on the task. Though it ended different, perhaps without the supernaturals and powers, this is how the tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice ended.

Orpheus almost fulfilled his quest but unfortunately his love for her became too unbearable to have made the quest fail. As for Yuu, he fulfilled his promise to save everyone but at the cost of forgetting all about it. Or something like that. But at least, the series ended in a happy note.
