Character Analysis: Ayapi and Tsuyuyu (Magical Girl Site) + Anime Review

Magical Girl Site is an anime series about girls who are living an 'unfortunate,' or rather tragic, life, are suddenly given powers by a mysterious website. This powers bestowed upon them are called magic stick, they vary in what type of power they have and what form/shape they have. A magic stick may be a small mallet that can hit like a ton when used or a small toy handgun that can teleport its target to any different location as the user wants.

Unfortunately, whenever these magic sticks are use, the user will have to sacrifice a portion of their life, both physically and mortally. When a Magical Girl overuses her magic stick she will be in a point of extreme exhaustion as well as her time decays. Doctors who unknowingly checked upon the body of a Magical Girl who overused their sticks saw signs of internal body degeneration, exclaiming that even though the body is young, the organs and how they functions are that of an old person. Kosame Amagai, a Magical Girl, bestowed with the power to heal also explained that even though she can heal users of magic sticks she certainly cannot give back the time/life they used up.

I guess, that's the gist of the anime series.

Aya Asagiri and Tsuyuno Yatsumura are the two main protagonist of the story.

The story mainly revolves around the unfortunate life of Aya Asagari, a girl who is bullied by life. Her brother, Kaname Asagiri, uses her as punching bag/stress release whenever she comes home from school. In school, she is being bullied by Sarina Shizukume and her friends to a point when she was almost raped because of the bullying Sarina and her friends are doing at her.

It was one night after her brother left her room, that the Magical Girl Site, appeared and made Aya Asagiri a Magical Girl. The Magic Stick she acquired was a winged toy handgun that when fired on a target or a group of target will immediately teleport them to whatever place she thinks of.

When she first used her magic stick, her targets are Erica, a friend of Sarina, and Shota, an senior who wanted to rape her, and the place that she thought of was the train tracks.

Tsuyuno Yatsumura, the first friend of Aya Asagiri. After find out of the powers of Aya Asagiri, she immediately came and rescued her from more bullying from Sarina, as well as somehow stopped Kaname Asagiri stress relief from his sister. In a sense, it was her who save Aya Asagiri from the unfortunate things in her bullied life.

It was later revealed that her misfortune happened when her almost perfect childhood life got ruined by robber and killed off her family. When she became a Magical Girl and was given her magic stick, she did all she could to exact vengeance on the person, the one man, that took away her happy life from her. From here on, her life's purpose was for the sake of tormenting this person, to give this person hell while at the same time keeping him alive, keeping her from truly exacting her vengeance.

Her magic stick was a cellphone, when she press or activate a program in it. Time freezes around her. Names listed in the cellphone will  be unaffected by her power.

Now come to think of it, I guess the magic stick and power bestowed upon the Magical Girl, have got something to do with the misfortune they are having.

For instance, Ayapi being bullied most of the time as well as the physical abuse she's been receive from her brother, wants her to go somewhere else. Even though she wanted to take her life, she couldn't. Perhaps it's not just that she's afraid but she still has hope. There's a better place meant for her. And that happened when she met Tsuyuyu.

In the case of Nako, I mean Tsuyuyu, her ability to stop ability is what symbolize her deep grudge and her unforgiving persona towards those that did her wrong, towards that one man who killed her family, towards that one single person who traumatized. Or maybe something like.

She lost her powers as well as her reason for living when the one man who she wanted to suffer got killed right in front of her. She meant herself to do the vengeance but she couldn't. Only when Ayapi made her realized of how beautiful it is to live that she moved on

Why can't I make a connection with these two main protagonist as well as not much like the whole season 1 of the anime? (assuming there will be more seasons to come)

For one, I was expecting the anime to be darker than it supposed to be. With the themes of bullying, trauma, suicide, abuse as well as murder. But it failed to meet my expectation. The two animes I watched right after this were Saekano and Satsuriku no Tenshi... So perhaps the 'Angels of Death' anime set my expectation too high.

The anime is too fast paced that I only have a short time of having any connection with the characters. It was only after I've watched the anime contemplated a bit did I realized the beauty of the character Nijimin did to the story. The sacrificial lamb to have triggered a dramatic change for the Rebel Girls and most importantly to the main character Aya Asagiri.

It's unfortunate that the character of Aya Asagiri was not given justice because though she had change, it was minute. It's true that in the first part of the anime she wanted to kill herself for the how the way goes for her, but all of it happened only in the first episode, not much proper time given to truly understand her character, same goes for all the character.

I apologize if I'm being too focus on the pace and connection I have for the character but that's just how it is for me. I do know the manga will do justice for this series but right now I'm only taking to account the series. Perhaps the second season will give justice to what this series deserve but as of now... it's unfortunate.

The problem in my opinion, is that the anime focused on a lot of characters instead of focusing on few while at the same time not committing much air time for said few characters. Or rather not showing any emphatic thing about them.

I've watched an anime series titled 'Kotoura-san,' it did justice on the few characters it showed under limited episode of 12. It focused mainly on the main character Kotoura-san while at the same time putting together the different side characters into the story. More like the main character became a glue for each side characters.

The Angels of Death series had the two main characters blend together while adding the side characters as flavoring for their beautiful dark themed series.

Overall, the Magical Girl Site, tried to show friendship will prevail while at the same time not showing much friendship in the most part of the anime. I'm quite annoyed as well that the anime ended with a weird cliche of having friendship triumph all.

It felt like the ending of 'I can't become a hero so I reluctantly decided to get a job,' with the main protagonist saving his love interest who just suddenly up and turned evil by showing her a piece of paper. And by all means, this anime is a comedy adventure. Not a dark kind of anime.

I expected much of this anime. But then again, it's for kids, right?

Beside, the character design kind of reminded of Hitori Bocchi, also a comedy anime series.
