The First Mate's Dilemma on the Island

"Say, captain," the first mate suddenly said. "When are we leaving?"

The two were walking along the streets of a foreign land. They docked there to resupply and have a bit of rest. The streets were paved as well the houses are built sturdy. They are in different place from the native islands they've been. The sand were far off the shore. The road they walk are of stone.

"Why are you suddenly asking that?" the captain said. "Weren't you the one who were most excited about going here?"

"Yes, but I just.. I don't know. I just feel like leaving already," the first mate said. "So when?"

"You're acting like a child, you know that. It'll be a few days or even a week," the captain replied. "Besides, we should be enjoying our stay here. This place seems to be more different than those we've been. Maybe a nice change of pace. Don't you just like this warm atmosphere?"

The first mate nodded. He wanted to say no but it was the captain who would decide.

"You don't mind if I just stay on the ship for the time being we are here?"

"On the ship?" the captain asked surprised. "No, my good friend, that's not your duty. Besides, we found a place to stay here along with the crew. And if you're thinking about who's guarding the ship, I have our men guard it on shifts. So there's nothing to worry about."

"But can I just stay there? Until all our business here is done?"

"You're being stubborn. You're the first mate, so I have you to assist me on deciding on some things. Also, you're more like a father and an adviser to me as well all of us. You know more about what do, than any of us."

The first mate wanted to speak. But hesitated otherwise. She was complimenting him. But still his heart was unease. He nodded and stayed silent.

They continued their walk towards the tavern the rest of their crew were eating.

"Tell me," the captain said. They were in front of the door when the captain paused before pushing through. "What is bothering you?"

"I don't know," the first mate replied. "I just suddenly felt, I don't want to stay here much longer."

"Sometimes, you're being childish. You know that?" the captain pushed on and went through. The crew were having a fun night. They were all happy to be staying there.

"I'm afraid," the first mate whispered. But his voice wasn't heard as the loudness drowned it. His voice was not as clear as his resolve. He was afraid.
